The emergence of COVID-19 in BC forced intensive care units across the province to quickly plan for and adapt to an anticipated surge in cases. By overcoming traditional silos and utilizing a provincially coordinated response to this pandemic, mortality related to COVID-19 in critically ill patients in BC is dramatically lower (15.4%1) than other global studies have shown (up to 26% in some jurisdictions1). The development of a new network to facilitate rapid clinical sharing and the creation of a COVID-19 monitoring tool to guide decision-making are two strategic approaches that have contributed to improved clinical outcomes.

In this webinar you will learn how:

  • Provincial collaboration improved the critical care response to COVID-19
  • A common purpose helped overcome traditional silos and establish new partnerships
  • Open sharing of information improved clinical practice and the availability of resources

COVID-19 Through a Quality Lens is a series of distinct webinars, each one highlighting important learning that has emerged from a quality perspective during the health care response to the pandemic. As the province prepares for a potential second wave of COVID-19, the series aims to mobilize critical knowledge and enhance the understanding of the new normal moving forward.

Speakers from different areas of the health care system will share several insights around the impacts of COVID-19 in their respective areas of care, including:

  • Challenges that emerged as a result of the pandemic
  • How any changes in the system impacted the quality of care
  • What improvements to care were realized
  • What improvements can be sustained and widespread
