Getting to the “How” of Team-Based Care: A Dialogue Circle

This is the second installment of Team Up! Team-Based Primary & Community Care in Action that aims to connect individuals and teams, identify tools to apply to current work underway and share experiences in team-based care across the province.

The webinar will take deep dive on the “how” of team-based care through a virtual dialogue circle with five dynamic speakers. Sydney Saunders, Pharmacist with Northern Health in Dawson Creek, BC, is integrated into four private medical clinics in a co-located practice model; from Lu’ma Medical Centre, Dalena Beitel, Elders Program Coordinator and Larry Becker, Lead Medical Office Assistant are striving for excellence in culturally integrated primary health care; Darlene Arsenault, Director Primary Care Planning, has been operationalizing team-based care through a structured approach across Interior Health; and Dr. Selena Lawrie, Family Physician, has had a lot of trial and error with team-based care and is ready to share from her experience.

Speaker Bios

Sydney Saunders	Sydney Saunders is a pharmacist with Northern Health in Dawson Creek, BC, splitting her time between acute care and a new primary care role. Since developing this position over the past year, she has integrated into four private medical clinics within her community to complete medication assessments and provides recommendations and support to providers in a co-located practice model. She works to optimize patients’ medication therapy, simplify regimens, manage drug interactions and side effects and enhance patients’ understanding of their medications. She practices in a team-based, patient-centred fashion and strives to keep patients happy, healthy, and thriving in their community.
Selena Lawrie	Dr. Selena Lawrie is a Family Physician who lives with her 4 teenage children in Kamloops, BC. She is passionate about working with people, communities and organizations to improve individual and population health and wellness. Her clinical work has included over 2 decades of broad scope family medicine from rural to urban, in-hospital, maternity, indigenous and community care. She was the founding Site Director of the University of British Columbia Family Practice Residency Training Program in Kamloops, as well as the founder and former President of Supporting Team Excellence with Patients Society. She was also instrumental in the development of the UBC Family Practice Learning Centre in Kamloops. She is currently a Board Member of the Interior Health Authority, a member of the Steering Committee for the BC Physicians Health Program, and a member of the BC Primary and Community Care Research Advisory Committee.
Darlene Arsenault	Currently the Director of Primary Care Planning in Interior Health, where a focus on Team-Based Care is foundational to the work of primary care networks and specialized community service programs moving forward. Past work includes being Director of Rehabilitation in Interior Health and a practising Occupational Therapist with a long history of using team-based care.
Dalena Beitel	Frankie Dalena is a 2 spirited Metis person who has been living on the traditional unceded homelands of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil- Waututh Nations. She is currently working as an Elders Program Coordinator and Helper at Lu’ma Medical Centre Society. Dalena comes with over 20 years supporting vulnerable residents of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. She works from a strength based perspective, through active listening and develops a holistic wellness plan, that reflects each person’s immediate needs, but also provides opportunity for growth and increased wellness. Dalena walks in knowledge, understanding and respect of Indigenous culture. Dalena is currently on the Board of Directors of Four Feathers Society, supporting the Indigenous LGBTQ community in BC, and runs a traditional drumming circle at Lu’ma. She is often accompanied by her dog ‘Frankie’ who enjoys greeting patients at the clinic and supports them during appointments if needed.
Larry Becker	Larry comes from and was raised in the Musqueam Community. Working at Lu’ma Medical as the Lead MOA, Larry works using his Cultural Teachings, Education, and Life Experiences to lead the front end team. This team works in the center of the circle to ensure that all patient care is met by communicating in real time with staff from all departments. While still attending to the many multi-layers, thinking as many steps ahead as needed to ensure things run as smoothly as possible. These layers refer to things such as, organizing and ensuring all supplies or tools are available, anticipating any hiccups and problem solving before they arise, transparency and open communication with the front end team to ensure all are up to date with the many changes happening on the daily.
