National Surgical Quality Improvement Program

We’ve been been supporting sites within BC that participate in the American College of Surgeons’ National Surgical Quality & Safety Program (NSQIP) since 2011. Twenty-three adult sites and one pediatric site across the province are participating in a BC NSQIP Collaborative, as part of the Surgical Quality Action Network.

Participating sites have access to validated, risk-adjusted data which measures 30-day outcomes from over 700 NSQIP sites in nine countries. This enables them to compare their data at local, provincial and international levels, and helps them identify the specific areas on which to focus their improvement efforts.

We support NSQIP sites across the province in a number of ways, including through expanded data support which consists of regular site-specific and provincial reports that enable comparison between sites and highlight trends and comparisons of surgical quality metrics over time. Another focus has been around strengthening engagement between sites through the coordination of provincial collaborative webinars which facilitate and support shared learning, improvement initiatives, best practices and troubleshooting amongst the BC NSQIP sites.
