National Surgical Quality Improvement Program
National Surgical Quality Improvement Program
The National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) was implemented in 2011 as a measurement system to help understand the safety and effectiveness dimensions of surgical quality in British Columbia.
The BC Patient Safety & Quality Council (BCPSQC) has been supporting sites within BC that participate in the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality & Safety Program (ACS NSQIP) since 2011. There are currently 24 sites, consisting of 23 adult sites and 1 pediatric, across the province participating in the BC NSQIP Collaborative, as part of the Surgical Quality Action Network (SQAN).
Participating sites have access to validated, risk-adjusted data, measuring 30-day outcomes from over 700 NSQIP sites in 9 different countries across the globe, enabling sites to compare their data at local, provincial and international levels. This helps sites identify the specific areas to focus their quality improvement (QI) efforts.
BCPSQC supports NSQIP sites across the province in a number of ways. This includes providing expanded data support, consisting of regular site-specific and provincial reports to enable comparison between sites, and highlight trends and comparisons of surgical quality metrics over time. Another focus has been around strengthening engagement between sites, through the coordination of provincial collaborative webinars, to facilitate and support shared learning, QI initiatives, best practices and troubleshooting amongst the BC NSQIP sites.
