Education for Quality and Safety Leaders: A Needs Assessment and Program Review

The “Education for Quality and Safety Leaders” report supports the BC Patient Safety & Quality Council’s commitment to building capability for patient safety and quality improvement across BC’s health system.  This report was developed with input from the Education and Capacity Building Working Group. Report Summary

This report focuses on health authority quality and safety leaders; those responsible for leading and supporting improvement initiatives. It provides a snapshot of their skills, abilities and professional development needs and explores some of the ways these needs are being met in other jurisdictions. Based on these findings, some options are presented for the BCPSQC to consider to support the health authorities as they build capacity for patient safety and quality improvement.

Education and Professional Development Needs in BC

Health authority staff responsible for leading quality improvement and patient safety initiatives identified the need for additional education and professional development programs in the province.  A wide range of skill sets is required to support quality improvement.

Program Review

Approaches to patient safety and quality training from 11 programs in Canada, the United States and the UK are described in detail.

Professional Development Strategy – key lessons and considerations for BC

Key lessons were learned from these programs and considerations applicable to BC’s quality and safety education environment are identified in this report.

Professional Development Strategy

Following the publication of this report, the Council developed an education strategy, which includes the following programs:

  • The Quality Academy, a comprehensive, in-depth quality improvement and education program;
  • Virtual Learning Opportunities, a series of educational webinars on a variety of quality and patient safety topics as identified by this report; and
  • Supporting education programs offered by other organizations.
  • Targeted spread initiatives such as the Global Trigger Tool.
